New Delhi:
By 2020, India will have the worlds largest working population- 869 million -
but an IndiaSpend analysis of indicators on literacy, school enrolment,
learning outcomes, and education spending across four states - with 43.6 per
cent of India's school-age population between the ages of five and 14 -
revealed that India is unprepared to educate and School Education in India
train its young population. While minimum educational eligibility criteria
ranges from no bar to primary standard (as in case of crèche workers) to high
school pass or to class XII (as in case of IGNOU and Integrated Preprimary and
Primary Teachers Training), there exists marked variation in duration of
training too.
The
programme will be implemented in a manner that will provide adequate
opportunities for NGOs and the private sector to contribute towards the
achievement of these goals and lead towards a community-owned initiative for
universalizing elementary education.
Overall, in
India, children from rich families are more likely to be enrolled in school
than children from poor families, but this gap is greater in UP and Bihar than
it is in Kerala, according to a 2001 study by Deon Filmer and Lant Pritchett,
published in the journal Demography.
Another
report from 2013 stated that there were 229 million students enrolled in
different accredited urban and rural schools of India, from Higher
Education in India Class I to XII, representing an increase of 2.3
million students over 2002 total enrollment, and a 19% increase in girl's enrollment.
